The Artwork:

A cluster of fruit in impossible colors — pink, orange, red, lilac, gold, deep blue. And your eye goes straight to the black one. Before you decide to, you have already judged it: spoiled, rotten, the one gone bad. But look again. It has the same round weight as the others, the same fresh green leaf, the same care in every brushstroke. It is not rotten. It is simply dark, and we were taught to read dark as ruined.

This is the quiet accusation of the piece. How quickly we sort the world into good and spoiled by color alone, by surface alone, never once cutting it open to see. The black fruit sits among its bright siblings, perfectly whole, indicted by nothing but our assumptions. Every other tomato got the benefit of the doubt. It did not.

We do this to fruit. We do this to people. Let this be a reminder to wait before you decide what is rotten — that the thing you were ready to throw away might be the soundest one in the bowl, and that judgment from the outside is almost always too fast.
