The same four faces return, but everything has changed. Where there was earthy green, now there is cool blue, stark white, a single stroke of olive. The expressions are the same — the same tilted heads, the same searching eyes, the same rough and honest line — and yet they feel like different people entirely. Nothing moved but the color, and the whole mood turned with it.

That is the quiet trick at the heart of this piece. We believe we are reading faces, reading truth, reading the world as it is — but so much of what we feel is decided by the light we happen to see it in. Swap the palette and the sorrow becomes distance, the calm becomes cold, the warmth becomes something sharper. The faces never asked to be read this way. We brought the mood with us.
